Tack Strip & Accessories

Pro Tip: Position the tack strip 1/4" from the wall to leave space to push the carpet underneath the baseboard, and make sure the pins are angled toward the wall. This opposing angle is what creates the tension that pulls the carpet tight.

Tack trips are used during carpet installation to securely anchor the carpet and hold it taut. This prevents the carpet from shifting, bunching, or developing wrinkles over time. Along with padding, the strip creates a stable, even elevation around the room that prevents the carpet from rubbing directly against the subfloor, ensuring a comfortable feel underfoot.

For carpet installation over wood subfloors, a 1" tack strip is your best choice, and CAPITOL 120012 Extra-Wide Wood 1" Tack Strip meets the standards prescribed by the Carpet and Rug Institute, ensuring you best results.

If you are installing carpet over concrete subfloors, CAPITOL 120013 is ideal. And for large commercial or residential applications where part of the area has a wood subfloor and another part of the area has a concrete subfloor, CAPITOL 7/8" Dual-Purpose Peel & Stick Tack Strip is your best choice – with the added convenience of the strong adhesive backing that securely holds the strip to the subfloor.

If your carpet installation calls for a tack strip that holds up to standard power stretching, ROBERTS 20-1450 Smooth Edge Peel & Stick Tack Strip for Carpet Installation (3 Pack) is preferred by professionals for its strong initial grab that grips instantly, making your carpet immediately ready for stretching.

Additional tools like ROBERTS 10-108 Professional Tack Strip Cutter with 2" Jaws, designed to cut tack strip and architectural strip without extra effort, a Ripping Hammer like ROBERTS 10-114, designed with a long, straight claw ideal for pulling up old tack strip, and a Nail Driving Bar like ROBERTS 10-151 specially designed to position and hammer nails in hard-to-reach places like under cabinets, toe kicks, and next to glass doors, can make a big difference for your carpet installation to be neat and professional-looking.

Lastly, do not forget to stock up on screw flooring nails and concrete nails. ROBERTS 36-114 Unichrome Brass Drive Screw Nails are the best to obtain a "flush fit" when anchoring carpet bar and stair nosings. And ROBERTS 33-100 steel concrete nails are ideal for installation of carpet tack strips over concrete subfloors. These hard nails feature a short and thick shank with excellent piercing and fixing strength that makes them ideal for use on hard or aged concrete.
